New Beta of Google Analytics

I logged into my Google Analytics account tonight to find a surprise, a completely redesigned layout. It’s too late for me to really look into it right now, but it looks good at first glance.

For the time being, check out this post about the update at the Google Analytics Blog.

Google Analytics BetaI did notice a AdSense tool that I really liked. It shows how many times your ads displayed at certain positions. This could certainly come in handy for people that count on AdSense for traffic and sales.

I’ll see if I can do a little better review of it tomorrow after I’ve had some sleep.

Working 40 Hours Per Week?

I was reading a series of posts at TylerCruz.com titled 40-Hour Week Challenge. In the initial post Tyler states:

It’s a well known fact that I’m lazy. I find it hard not to be, though. As much as I love doing this for a living, it’s hard to force yourself to work longer hours than you need to. I normally work an average of 2-3 hours per day, but I decided to try something new.

I’m challenging myself to work 40 hours within 1-week.

I started reading Tyler’s blog because I stumbled accross one of his forums, which then pointed me to the rest of his sites. He has some successful sites. He makes more money than I do. I wanted to have the lifestyle of Tyler Cruz. However, after reading this series, I don’t think I could handle his lifestyle.

I have a full-time job and a family (wife and two daughters). I am used to working many, many hours per week. If I only had to work 40 hours per week, I would be very happy. To add to that, I don’t think I will ever totally retire, I would get too board.

Tyler’s post has really motivated me again. I now consider myself to have a great advantage, I am used to working. New websites are being created every second, but they’re not all being worked on. Every second that I spend planning, dreaming, and typing puts me ahead of someone else.

How do I know all this work is worth it? My household income is going up. We (wife and I) have decided that she will be running our ecommerce site full-time and not returning to work. She will now be pulling an income from our ecommerce site. We are living the “internet income” dream, we have eliminated her regular full-time job.

My Point…

Work hard…my successful sites have developed in the niche of gymnastics. My wife was a full-time gymnastics coach/manager for over 10 years, I still am a coach. My sites have not developed by chance over a few days or months. My successful sites have all taken 2-3 years to develope. I never gave up during the rough times. I fine tuned and tweeked things until they worked. I took planned risks, some of them worked and some did not.

My first ecommerce website is my only ecommerce site. It did $50K in sales last year and is on schedule to do over $60K this year. It will achieve its goals because of hard work and dedication, not luck. My first forum was a gymnastics forum. It failed because I didn’t put any time into it. I brought back that same forum under a different name and it is now successful. First try with one site, second try with the other. Wow…maybe I do have a clue or maybe it’s just about hard work and determination.

Does this mean I don’t enjoy sitting on the beach with a beer, of course not.

Back to Work,

Part 3: How Many Websites Can One Webmaster Manage?

This article seems as if it should have been several smaller ones. I will blog about that in a minute, but I think we left off with “Creating Websites You Know and Love”.

Creating Websites You Know & Love

This is a very simple concept. Don’t try to talk about something you don’t know about. Don’t blog (or create websites) about things just to get high valued AdSense clicks…write about what you know. I have a gymnastics forum that is starting to do very well. It is doing well because I was a gymnast and now I’m a coach, my life is gymanstics. My ecommerce store is a gymnastics pro shop, also what I know.

I am trying to branch out a bit, but still within my comfort zone. I am trying to start a country music community. I love country music, but I am not an authority on it. I will not pretend to be an authority. I’ll attract members can play a guitar and sing, but I’m just a fan. That’s the way I will present my information.

What’s my next thing? My family website, SlifeFamily.com…I know and love my family. How about “G” scale model trains and slot cars…I know and love them.

I can’t write about cell phones and techno gadgets. I’m not going for what will bring in the most money per click, I’m going for something that I know and love. Think about it, makes perfect sense.

How Many Websites Can One Webmaster Manage?

It really depends on what kind of site they are. Ecommerce sites are not just websites, they are full businesses. If you are going to run an ecommerce site, you have a real business. In other words, plan to work real hours. If you are talking about forums and blogs, I say 30 to 60 minutes per day per site. If one of them really takes off, plan on more.

Unstress yourself, manage your time, and create websites you know and love and you will be fine. I would say that 5 successful websites would be a full time job…or maybe 10 moderately successful sites…or 20 garbage sites…or 1 ecommerce site. There is no answer to this question. How hard are you willing to work?

Part 2: How Many Websites Can One Webmaster Manage?

Yesterday I started off with Part 1 of this 3 part article. Just as I was getting to the section on “budgeting your time”, I had to take my own advice. Today I’m back with more time, so here we go.

Budgeting Your Time Wisely

As a person gets older and gains more resposibility, time becomes more and more of a factor. I am absolutely terrible with time. Over the next few months I am going to try and break some of my bad habits and become a little more efficient. Here are a few of my problems.

  • Lack of a Laptop (problem solved)
    • Having a laptop allows you to be anywhere and post. You can keep content fresh and fix issues from anywhere in the world. It allows you to be in the same area with your family and still get some work done. By having a laptop, I can work 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there instead of waiting to get home and locking myself in the computer room for 3 hours. (My 3+ year old Gateway laptop died the other day, so I went out and bought a Toshiba Satellite. $1000 + a $300 warranty, I would reccommend the Satellite to anyone.)
  • Tied to a Laptop
    • A laptop should be used to help you out when needed. You should not be on the net doing nothing for hours just because you have a laptop. Get outside, go shopping, clean the house; make sure your life comes before your laptop. Laptops are very addictive, be careful.
  • Create a Daily Schedule
    • If you have several websites (or just one), creat a schedule. Force yourself to be productive. If you want to create 5 posts on your forum a day, do it from 9:00 am - 9:30 am everyday. Don’t stray from your task at hand. Make a schedule like this for every task you do and stick to it. If your daily website work takes 1.5 hours, then you should not be working on them for 5 hours everyday.
  • Limit R&D Time
    • Research and development is very important, but it cannot be done all the time. Give yourself 15 to 20 minutes a day to brainstorm. Surfing the net is not always the best way to do this. Think out of the box, get off your computer. Most likely you are just rehashing other peoples ideas if you find something online. Go sit on the beach with piece of paper and pen. THINK! The most unique and successful ideas are born in peoples imaginations and transfered to the net.
  • Go to Bed
    • As soon as you feel tired, be done with the computer. This is a no brainer, you’re not productive when you’re tired. If you’ve had a coffee, 4 Mountain Dews, a Snickers, and you’re eyes are bugging out…it’s time to go to bed (or run around the block 6 times and then go to bed). Make sure you have regular sleep patterns.
  • Leave Time for Your Real Life
    • I’m starting all these sites for a purpose, to live with less stress and have more time for my life. Everything takes work, but don’t kill yourself everyday to create average websites. Good sites take time. People don’t work 24 hours just because you do. Write quality content, stick to your schedule, and give the net some time to work while you’re at the beach. What?!?…that’s right go to the beach, by the time you get back you may just have a backlink.

I have to budget my time again. I’ll be back tomorrow with Part 3, “Create Sites You Know & Love”.

Part 1: How Many Websites Can One Webmaster Manage?

How many websites do you have? Do you ever feel overloaded? I have several now and I always feel overloaded. Let’s talk this issue and what is takes to manage multiple sites.

What Makes YOU Feel Overloaded?

I don’t think this is a question that anyone can answer the same way. Everyone has their own life, knowing your life (and not ignoring it) will help you control it. Here’s a little about my life.

I have several factors in my life right now that are making it more difficult than normal to keep up on my websites. I a wife, a daughter, and another daughter due to the 28th of this month. My family, of course, is much more important to me than my websites. We are also preparing to move from Califonia to Wisconsin, this will happen in the next two months. We will also be dropping to a single income family and I am changing jobs. I now have several websites that I really want to keep, but I am having trouble running them all.

My wife and I know our life and we know what we want it to be like. My wife and I have talked and we are making some major changes. Moving to Wisconsin will put us closer to family, so we will get some help. My wife will now be pulling her income from our ecommerce site, LeotardCrazy.com. We have decided to take a huge step. We are not going to let the websites overload us, we are going to make them a part of our life. We are looking for the extra family time that an internet income can provide.

The Advantage of Youth

You will notice that many internet entrepreneus (very successful ones) are very young, between the ages of 16-24 (sometimes younger). Many kids are turning the “business of the web” into a video game. They are spending less time on gaming systems and more time on building real websites. This experience guides them straight to success.

Some say the young have a serious advantage on the net. Maybe, and I wish I would have started off a little earlier than I did. However, I have a family and that is my “American Dream”. Anyone can build a website overnight, some people will never build a family. I am lucky.

Don’t neglect to start a website because you think it’s too late. If a 20 year old can build a revenue earning site in 6 months, so can a 45 year old. You just have to budget your time a little better as you age.

Budgeting Your Time Wisely

As I look at the clock, I realize that I must budget my time. Tune in tommorrow for Part 2 of this story.

Someone elses glasses?

In a small business I have noticed three major classes of people: workers, managers, and owners. All of these people are very important, so important, that they can’t function without each other. They are also all very different, each of them has positives and negatives.

Each of these types of people wear different “glasses”. I have worn 2 pair of the “glasses” extensively and the other pair I am just putting on. Each time I put on a new pair of “glasses” I notice that I can’t see something that I used to be able to. My point…don’t forget to look around with your glasses before you decide to try someone elses on. Often, things are not as bad as they seem.
